Camping at Assateague

I recently went to Assateague National Park to camp on the beach.  The camp sites are roughly about a couple of hundred steps from the water, so it’s truly beach-front camping.  In July, the weather’s great, in the 90s (fahrenheit), but the water’s hovering in the 60s.  Remember to apply plenty of sunblock, or you’ll be fried.

One of the interesting things about this park and its bordering neighbor (Assateague State Park) is that you can see wild horses and deers roaming around the park, and they are not afraid of people. Remember to cover and hide your food, otherwise they’ll have a feast whether it’s day or night. They tore one of our canopies down and had a themselves a buffet, luckily, on the last night, or we’d have no food left.

There’s one thing to note. The national park has portable toilets and only cold-water showers, so ladies may find this less than appealing. Some of the ladies in our group when to the state park to use toilets and take showers. However, you’ll have to tell the guards that you’re there to look for friends, or they won’t let you in.
